Favorite Activities in London

There are endless activities in London and the surrounding areas. These are just a few of my favorites that you may miss on your first trip to London. Don’t forget about some of the best tourist attractions like Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Tower of London, British Museum, or countless others.

Buckingham Palace Tour

Hands-down my favorite London attraction. Worth booking if you are in town! Buckingham Palace is usually open every day, from 9.30am to 7.30pm from July to September. If you are traveling to london during this time, make sure you do the tour and then purchase the afternoon tea in the back gardens. Take tea like a King & Queen! Pre-booking required.

Victoria & Albert museum

The V&A in London is a top art & design museum with objects from around the world. Must-sees for first-timers include the British Galleries, the Cast Courts, the Raphael Cartoons and the Jewelry Gallery. Part of the fun at the V&A is getting lost in the galleries and don’t miss the beautiful museum cafe. Free to visit, no booking required.

Day trip to Windsor

Just a 45-minute train ride from London - visit Windsor Castle, the oldest occupied castle in the world and is home to many historic treasures, including the State Apartments, Queen Mary's Doll's House, and St George's Chapel (where the queen is buried). Don’t forget to explore The town of Windsor, it has cobbled streets, boutiques, and cafes. The Changing of the Guard at Windsor Castle takes place on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 11 AM. Pre-booking required, best day trip from London, in my opinion.

National Gallery

A lot of people see the British museum, and skip this art-filled treasure. The National Gallery is an art museum in Trafalgar Square. Just a quick walk from big ben, it houses a collection of more than 2,300 paintings dating from the mid-13th century to 1900. Free to visit, don’t miss Van Gogh's Sunflowers and works by Turner, Leonardo, Velázquez, Titian, Constable, Botticelli, Monet, Caravaggio and Vermeer.

Churchill War Rooms

Any WWII fans can’t miss this attraction. During the Second World War a group of basement offices were occupied by leading government ministers, military strategists and the Prime Minister Winston Churchill. The rooms were used as a meeting place for the War Cabinet during air raids. Discover WWII History in these secret offices in London. Pre-booking required.

Favorite Food & Drink in London

Borough Market

You can’t miss food halls and markets in London if you are visiting! This is the best way to experience A lot of different types of food, no reservations required and appeal to lots of different palates. At Borough Market, there are food stalls you can walk up and grab something to eat. Borough Market is visited by millions of Londoners and tourists each year, and it’s one of the best food markets in London, without a doubt. Some great options include: Turnips, a famous chocolate strawberry spot, lots of bakeries, Northfield Farm, a saltbeef sandwich spot, Hash, a burger and mac and cheese stall. Gluten Free Options: Visit Free From Bakehouse for an all GF baked goods stall. Other GF options are La Pepiá and Tacos Padre. Take some food & baked goods to go for a snack later!

Experience Pub Culture

When in London, you can’t miss hitting one or two pubs. Pub culture is a big part of the UK, a few of my London favorites are Westminster Arms, Churchill Arms, a pub crawl on Fleet Street including a stop at Ye Olde Cheshire cheese, or visit one of the 11 quirky and fun Mr. Fogg’s locations.

Dishoom

Make reservations at lunch. If you are visiting London, trying out the Indian food is a must! Dishoom has locations all over town, and you’ll often see a line out of the door. My favorite is to book a lunch reservation (dinner reservations not allowed) and you can experience an amazing meal close to some of the best attractions in London without the wait.

Afternoon Tea

No trip to London would be complete without some afternoon tea. Reservations are required at most of the higher end options but so many cafes offer an afternoon tea option. Upscale afternoon tea: Lanesborough Hotel, Drury Lane Theatre, Sketch, Savoy Hotel. Some of the best casual afternoon teas that don’t require reservations include: Fortum & Mason Parlour, The Cellarium Café and Terrace inside of Westminster Abbey, The Orangery at Kensington Palace.

So many great shopping areas of London, these are a few of my favorites! Shopping in London is a vibrant and diverse experience, offering everything from high-end designer boutiques to quirky markets. Key areas include:

Jermyn St. for Men

The street is home to London's finest men's tailors, shirt makers, suppliers of leather goods, food and wine merchants, restaurants, hotels and art galleries.

Regent Street

Regent Street has many UK flagship stores for international and British brands, including Burberry, Coach, Kate Spade, J. Crew, Tory Burch, and Tommy Hilfiger. Known for its iconic architecture and flagship stores, including Hamleys, the famous toy store.

Natural History Museum

A favorite among children, the Natural History Museum showcases a vast collection of specimens from various segments of natural history. Princess Diana Memorial Playground & Hyde Park

Paddington Bear Experience

By far my favorite London attraction with kids that requires tickets and pre-booking. It is immersive and so well done. Worth the price tag for any Paddington Bear Fan. This delightful experience brings the beloved character of Paddington Bear to life. Families can enjoy themed displays, photo opportunities, and interactive exhibits that celebrate Paddington’s adventures. Don’t forget to visit the nearby Paddington Bear shop for souvenirs and treats!

Brigit’s Bakery Bus Tour

Experience London’s sights in a unique way with Brigit's Bakery Bus Tour. Enjoy a delightful afternoon tea served on a vintage double-decker bus as you take in iconic landmarks like the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye. This fun and tasty tour combines sightseeing with delicious pastries and treats, making it a memorable outing for families. It’s a pricey option, but again a great experience with kids. See a kid-friendly show in the West End

London's West End is famous for its theatrical productions, many of which are family-friendly. London Zoo

Located in Regent's Park, the London Zoo is home to over 750 species of animals, making it a thrilling destination for young animal lovers. Kids can enjoy close encounters with penguins, watch lions being fed, and learn about conservation efforts. Tower of London

A trip to the Tower of London is like stepping back in time. Kids will be fascinated by the tales of kings, queens, and prisoners that have shaped British history.
